It is our internal sense of worth as human beings.<br \/>Self-confidence, by contrast, is the trust we have in our abilities to perform specific actions. Someone can have high self-confidence in a skill, for example professional competence, but still have low overall self-esteem. Self-esteem is the overall picture we hold of ourselves. It answers the question, \u201cHow much am I worth as a person?\u201d It is linked to a sense of value, acceptance, and self-love. It is built mainly through childhood experiences, relationships with significant others such as parents, messages we receive from our environment, and personal life events. When it is low, it can lead to insecurity, fear of rejection, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mytherapist.gr\/en\/mental-health-articles\/relationships-marriage\/relationships-and-emotional-dependence\/\">dependence on the acceptance of others<\/a>. Self-confidence is belief in our capabilities. It reflects how sure we feel that we can achieve specific goals or complete tasks and responsibilities. It answers the question, \u201cCan I do it?\u201d It focuses on skills and specific areas, for example confidence in studies, work, or social settings. It can be high in one area and low in another. It is strengthened through action, practice, and experience.<\/p><div>Rosenberg notes (1965, 1979) that many people assume that if someone respects themselves in certain aspects of life, then they respect themselves overall. If they believe they are intelligent, attractive, moral, interesting, then they have a positive view of themselves as a whole. However, it is clear that a person\u2019s global self-esteem is not based on their skills in general, but on the strengths that matter to them. When self-esteem is low<\/strong><\/p><p>You may feel inferior to others. People with low self-esteem often value other people\u2019s opinions more than their own. They may struggle to accept compliments and focus on perceived weaknesses rather than strengths. They often fear failure and believe others are better. They may also take criticism very personally.<\/p><p>Low self-esteem often shows up as:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Intense self-criticism and guilt-filled inner dialogue<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Seeking reassurance from others<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Difficulty saying no or setting boundaries<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Comparison and fear of rejection<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Underneath is the belief \u201cI am not enough.\u201d This pattern often has roots in childhood, through demanding parents, neglect, or lack of emotional safety.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>2. Inflated self-esteem<\/strong><\/p><p>There is also the other end, a seemingly high self-esteem that hides insecurity. People with inflated high self-esteem may appear overly confident, but beneath the surface there is fear of vulnerability and a need for control. True self-esteem does not need to prove anything. It feels enough without comparison.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>3. Healthy self-esteem<\/strong><\/p><p>Healthy self-esteem does not mean perfection. It means accepting yourself with both light and shadow.<br \/>A person with stable self-esteem:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Acknowledges mistakes without self-cancellation<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Sets boundaries without guilt<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Loves themselves without becoming self-centered<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Self-esteem is a life skill. It is cultivated through self-awareness, empathy, and self-care. Healthy self-esteem includes a realistic and balanced view: recognizing and accepting both strengths and weaknesses, with realistic expectations for oneself and others.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>4. From low to healthy self-esteem<\/strong><\/p><p>This transition takes time, awareness, and consistency. Helpful steps include:<\/p><ol><li aria-level=\"1\">Notice your inner dialogue and soften harsh self-criticism<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Recognize your achievements, even small ones<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Set boundaries, saying no is an act of self-respect<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Seek support, therapy can help you understand the patterns holding you back<\/li><\/ol><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>5. Self-esteem in relationships<\/strong><\/p><p>The relationship you have with yourself is reflected in every other relationship.
